Pre-ETs Toolkit
Welcome to the VCU RRTC Pre-Employment and Transition Services (Pre-ETS) Toolkit for students with significant disabilities, 14-16 years of age. This toolkit is designed to introduce Pre-ETS skills and provide lesson facilitation strategies for VR Counselors, Pre-ETS facilitators, and educators. While each lesson builds upon the previous, individual lessons can be taken out of the toolkit format to tailor instruction to students' needs. The toolkit is divided into three sections:
Prerequisite Knowledge
To fully benefit from the Pre-ETS toolkit lessons, students will need to have some prior technology skills that include:
- Accessing the internet
- Checking email
- Opening files
- Copying and pasting
- Clicking and dragging elements in PowerPoint
Review the materials on the Technology Assessment page before beginning instruction to practice and assess students' technology skills. Additional tips and resources are available there to further support students' technology skillset!
Lesson Materials
Each lesson contains materials to facilitate learning, such as objectives, a lesson presentation, workbook activities for students, and pre- and post-checks.
- Instructor Presentations: These slides are meant to be used during instruction. The slide notes section provides a suggested script on what to say to students, additional tips, and instructor notes.
- Student Workbook: Student workbooks are designed for use during instruction. Students will record their responses in their individual workbook copies.
- Knowledge Check: Each lesson includes knowledge checks to be given before and after instruction to measure student understanding and learning.
Report Templates
Three report templates are provided on each section overview page. Use these reports to provide comprehensive feedback on students' activities in the lessons on job exploration, workplace readiness lessons, and community-based work experiences. Consider sharing reports with stakeholders, such as students, families, educators, VR counselors, and direct supports.
Expanding Your Knowledge
These are optional activities and resources that can reinforce lesson objectives in the home, engage families, or supplement classroom instruction.
Additional Resources
These are extra tools, websites, and information to help students with disabilities get ready for work, plan for the future, and succeed after high school. These resources support what's in the Pre-ETS Toolkit and help stakeholders use it more effectively to find even more ways to plan for the future.
The Pre-ETS toolkit is part of a research study, funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR grant number #90RTEM0002).
